The company said the format garnered more than 6.5 billion views in the first half of 2026.
YouTube wants to make microdramas a bigger focus, following a massive surge in popularity for the format over the past year.
Indeed, YouTube reported that microdramas surpassed 6.5 billion views in the app in the first half of 2026, an increase of more than 50% year over year, with the format seeing significant momentum in the Asia Pacific region.
To fuel this growth, YouTube said it’s developing more monetization pathways. The platform also shared insights into how to create compelling microdrama content.
First, YouTube wants to provide additional income options for microdrama creators. This follows the company's MadeOn event announcement last month of Shorts Series, which makes it easier for creators to group their Shorts into seasons and episodes.
As per YouTube: “In the coming weeks, we’ll revamp the viewer experience for members-only episodes on mobile. Viewers will be able to easily join a channel membership to keep watching the next episodes without having to leave the content they are enjoying.”
In terms of building audience, YouTube also said that its auto-translation tools are facilitating broader reach for microdrama creators, with multi-language audio, artificial intelligence-generated local subtitles and localized metadata all enabling significant audience expansion.
“[A] series shot in Tokyo or Seoul [can] find an audience in Brazil without extra dubbing costs,” YouTube said. “Even better, episodes hold their value over time. 40% of views and 30% of clicks occurred more than 30 days after the video goes live, meaning Episode 1 keeps finding new fans and earning ad revenue long after premiere week.
