Your Business Is Growing, But Your Profits Aren’t. Here’s What You’re Missing.

Revenue is increasing, but profits aren’t? Discover five reasons business growth can hurt profitability and how to build a more sustainable company.

Revenue is increasing. New customers are coming in. Your team is growing. So why does your bank account tell a different story?

I have seen entrepreneurs build businesses that appear successful from the outside while becoming harder to run every quarter. They win larger contracts, hire more people and expand their services, yet the founder feels more pressure than before. Revenue is rising, but profitability, cash flow and personal freedom are not following.

The issue is that revenue growth and profitable growth are two different achievements. One tells you that people are buying. The other tells you whether your business model can deliver that demand sustainably.

Before you chase another revenue milestone, take a hard look at what the growth is actually costing you.

One of the first things I want a business owner to examine is the contribution each customer, product and service makes after direct delivery costs. A $50,000 client may appear more valuable than a $25,000 client. But if the larger account requires constant customization, urgent requests and senior staff attention, the smaller account may produce a healthier return.

This is not an argument for rejecting demanding customers. Some strategic accounts create references, distribution opportunities or learning that matters. The problem begins when you cannot articulate why the account is worth its cost.

Build a simple customer profitability view. Start with contract revenue. Subtract direct labor, software, vendors, fulfillment and other costs that would disappear if you did not serve that customer.
