Siemens Healthineers to stop selling general ultrasound systems

In a strategy shift, the company will invest in its procedural ultrasound business, supporting cardiovascular surgeries.

Siemens Healthineers said Monday that it will no longer sell general imaging ultrasound systems , focusing instead on ultrasound used in procedural imaging.

The company will focus on systems used in interventional cardiology and electrophysiology procedures. Siemens Healthineers said this approach will allow it to bring together its imaging systems, software capabilities and partnerships with heart device companies to support physicians in increasingly complex procedures.

Siemens Healthineers said it will continue to provide support for its general ultrasound systems, including maintenance, software updates and transducer availability.

Siemens Healthineers last year debuted a new strategy to focus on using artificial intelligence and partnerships to tackle four prevalent diseases: stroke, cancer, cardiovascular and neurovascular conditions.

The company’s latest changes contribute to that effort. Noting that general imaging ultrasound is well served, with multiple established companies, Siemens Healthineers said it plans to focus on image-guided cardiovascular therapy. One of the modalities the company is emphasizing is intracardiac echocardiography, a technique where an ultrasound-tipped catheter is passed into the heart.

Siemens Healthineers plans to offer its Acuson Origin cardiovascular imaging platform, which received Food and Drug Administration clearance in 2024. The system includes AI features to help with measurements and view recognition. The company will also continue to sell its Acuson Freestyle wireless ultrasound system and its P500 portable ultrasound machine.

Siemens Healthineers said it would discontinue sales of general ultrasound systems including its Acuson Sequoia, Redwood, Juniper and Maple brands.
