Horror filmmaker Zach Cregger has explained why he was "frustrated" that much of the conversation around his Resident Evil film "didn't have anything to do with the movie."
The mind behind hits like Barbarian and Weapons touched on his feelings about the lead-up to the premiere of his latest project during an appearance on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast. Anyone who paid a second of attention to the Resident Evil movie adaptation knows Cregger struggled to win fans over ahead of its release, and it's something that left him frustrated from a number of angles.
"I think I was frustrated at the conversation around Resident Evil and how much of the conversation really didn't have anything to do with the movie," he said when explaining why he will likely stray from making movies based on established IP in the future.
"It had everything to do with whether the movie was living up to the different standards that different fans of the games had. Whether it was using the characters or not, or what did I get wrong in the lore? It was just a lot about, 'Why isn't this like the source material, or why is it good that it's not like the source material? All the conversation just felt like it was about not the movie."
Skeptical viewers harped on most of the same topics between the release of Resident Evil's first trailer and its theatrical premiere. Where's Leon? Why is it snowing in Raccoon City? Why does Austin Abrams' character have a smartphone?
