During its recent announcement of potential studio shut-downs or spinoffs as part of its company-wide reset, Xbox named five specific studios as being on the chopping block. Those were Double Fine, Ninja Theory, Compulsion, Undead Labs and Arkane. The fates of all but that last studio have seemingly been decided.
Xbox has apparently offered a bit of extra time to the studio in compliance with French law. In a statement to PC Gamer, a Microsoft rep said, “We have extended the consultation period by one additional month as we explore options, including finding a partner to support the studio through the development work still ahead.”
French news site Le Monde reports that November 13 is the planned end date for the period in which Microsoft is required to make a good-faith effort to find a partner. A one-month extension would put the deadline in mid-December, right before the holidays — a less-than-auspicious time to lay off 217 people, to put it mildly.
Arkane is currently working on Marvel’s Blade, an adaptation of the comic book character that was first announced in 2023. The “partner” that Microsoft mentions would have to be willing to provide support for the project through its completion. A representative for the French Printemps Écologique union told Le Monde that the game is almost finished and would be a “monumental waste” to cancel at this stage.
