When it comes to giving an animated movie a particular look and vibe, accept no substitute for stop-motion animation. That’s the method used in Laika Studios’ excellent new movie Wildwood. The film just hit theaters, but it’s already available to preorder in physical formats, including a 4K steelbook release (see it on Amazon).

Although the steelbook's art and design are not yet available, I'd grab it sooner than later if you're interested, because limited-edition steelbooks like this tend to sell out. Preorders are also live for other formats as well.

Wildwood is not quite a children’s movie since it’s rated PG-13, but thanks to its fable-like quality, it appeals to a wide range of ages. It all kicks off when a child is abducted and whisked away into an enchanted forest. The boy's teenage sister Prue and her classmate Curtis then go off to find him.

The movie features a star-studded voice cast, including Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Charlie Day, Jemaine Clement, Tom Waits (Tom Waits!), and many more.

In IGN’s Wildwood review, critic Tom Jorgensen wrote, “Wildwood is an arresting, exciting fantasy epic made all the more impressive by the fact that its fully realized and well-thought out world is handmade and hand-animated. The craft on display from Laika and director Travis Knight through this story of grief and growing up is commendable, and Wildwood’s massive sense of both scale and whimsy are constant joys.”

As yet, we don’t have details on what kinds of bonus materials will be included in the release.
