Given how many games are released every month, it’s easy to overlook hidden gems in the ever-growing open-world RPG genre. While the biggest releases get plenty of attention from influencers and gaming outlets, many smaller titles fall through the cracks. Some are fortunate enough to be discovered over the years through consistent and positive word of mouth, but even then, tons of great games remain underrated and relatively unknown, overshadowed by yet another colossal AAA open-world RPG.
This list is entirely dedicated to such titles, lesser-known RPGs whose fans would probably agree they’re true gems of the genre and deserving of much more recognition. From small indie games to total conversion mods that can give full-priced releases a run for their money, here are some masterpiece-grade open-world RPGs that don’t deserve to be ignored.
We’ll use Steam user reviews (worldwide) to help back up the “masterpiece” label.
Let’s start with a game that’s probably ignored by many because it’s a mod. Enderal: Forgotten Stories isn’t just one of the biggest and best total conversions for Skyrim ever made; it’s a damn fine open-world RPG from every angle. It's not an exaggeration to recommend it to every Skyrim fan, especially since it’s free for owners of the game.
Everybody knows Skyrim and The Witcher, but plenty of fantastic medieval RPGs have been forgotten by time, doomed to obscurity.
Despite its origins, Enderal: Forgotten Stories is set in its own fascinating and immersive dark fantasy world, fully handcrafted and featuring multiple biomes to explore, from deserts and mountains to heathlands and forests.
