True Detective Season 5 will officially star Antonio Banderas and Nicolas Cage as its two leads.
The next season of the HBO crime series confirmed the duo today with a video post on social media. Production is expected to begin in 2027, with a more specific release date for the follow-up episodes unclear for now.
True Detective Season 4: Night Country showrunner Issa López is back to serve as showrunner on Season 5. While most plot details remain under wraps this early in development, the next batch of episodes are expected to take place in Jamaica Bay, New York, with Banderas tapped as Rai García and Cage set as Henry Logan, as told by The Hollywood Reporter.
Banderas and Cage are two names that have circulated in the TV rumor mill for some time. Word of Cage's potential involvement surfaced all the way back in August of last year, but updates on that front then went quiet for months. It wasn't until this past weekend that the actor took the stage at New York Comic Con to tease that he was still in the mix.
"So, I think I’m probably going to do another season of television," he told the crowd (via THR). "I think I might do a season of True Detective. That’s OK that I’m the first to announce that, right?"
It wasn't too much of a surprise to hear Cage testing the waters, but confirmation of Banderas' involvement was mostly limited to the odd rumor and never felt quite as certain.
