Most of LEGO’s retro-inspired gaming sets are high-end builds with relatively high piece counts — and so they cost a lot of money. I’m talking sets like LEGO PlayStation, LEGO Arcade Pinball Machine, and LEGO Pokémon: Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise (and before you say it, LEGO Game Boy is the exception that proves the rule, folks).
By comparison, the delightfully generic LEGO Arcade Machine set is smaller and cheaper, if no less ambitious. It normally costs $40, but right now it’s on sale at LEGO for $31.99. It’s a very cool 468-piece set that happens to be retiring soon, so it won’t be available much longer. You even get double LEGO Insider points when you buy it.
Instead of paying the big bucks to license a game like Centipede or Space Invaders, LEGO has created this set based on a fictional top-down shooter simply named Space. But it certainly looks like a game from the heyday of ‘80s arcades, and the lack of a license helps keep the price down.
The set is an arcade machine, and it comes with a minifigure of a long-haired, unshaven man, the type of teenage slacker that Boomers used to complain about spending all their time at the arcade. The figure even has two coins you can slide into a slot in the machine. But this set is more than meets the eye.
The arcade cabinet opens up like a book, cracking open thanks to a pair of hinges built into its side.
