Yesterday, Ubisoft issued a statement about the future of the Assassin's Creed series, and the publisher's comments included quite a big surprise: there are currently no new remakes of the series' past games in the works.
"One thing we want to be transparent about today is that we currently have no other Assassin’s Creed remake actively in development," Ubisoft said in a statement on its website. "Our teams are already focused on the next chapter of Assassin's Creed titles, including projects you haven't heard about yet, featuring new settings and stories."
This has come as a shock to some players because, back in 2024, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot specifically mentioned that upcoming remakes - plural - were in active development across Ubisoft studios. "Firstly, players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we've created in the past and modernise them; there are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich," Guillemot said.
Given the success of this year's Black Flag Resynced - which sold over 3.5 million copies and "exceeded annual expectations within its first 14 days" - it's interesting to hear Ubisoft move away from what clearly seemed a popular way of revisiting older games. But it's worth noting that although Ubisoft isn't currently working on remakes, that doesn't mean we won't get them at some point in the future.
"Like many of you, we love the idea of revisiting our classic titles, and we'll keep exploring opportunities to bring older titles back," the company's statement continued.
