'The Witcher 3' Remaster Officially Confirmed to Use Fan-Made HD Mods

The modder behind one of The Witcher 3’s biggest visual overhauls is now working directly with CD Projekt Red

CD Projekt Red announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered during Gamescom Opening Night Live earlier this week, promising improved combat, enhanced monster behaviors, upgraded traversal and significantly better graphics.

Now, the studio has revealed that some of those visual improvements come from a familiar source: a popular fan-made mod.

HalkHogan, the creator of The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project NextGen Edition, announced Wednesday that they are working with CD Projekt Red on the remaster. Their work will be officially included in the game when it launches Sept. 29 for PC and consoles.

“HDRP will no longer be needed,” HalkHogan wrote in an update on Nexus Mods, referring to the mod’s common abbreviation. “My work will be officially available in the game.”

The HD Reworked Project has spent years upgrading The Witcher 3’s visual assets, including its textures, models, materials and shaders. According to the mod’s description, the project includes thousands of changes intended to make the game’s world more detailed, realistic and consistent with CD Projekt Red’s original art direction.

HalkHogan said nearly all of the game’s characters, monsters, animals, vegetation, armor and equipment for Geralt and Roach have been reworked for the remaster, along with a large portion of the environment.

The mod has become one of the most prominent visual overhauls for The Witcher 3 . 6 million views on Nexus Mods. HalkHogan’s announcement suggests that players who previously installed the HD Reworked Project will no longer need to maintain the mod separately once the remaster arrives.
