The Vibe-Coders Have Come For Nintendo, And Obviously This Won’t End Well

The past few weeks have seen an unquantifiable number of emulators, “native” PC ports, bizarre Minecraft meets Elden Ring mash-up mods, and web browser ports of games suddenly released online, which have been linked to the latest Claude update, Opus 5.5. Yet, while vibe-coding aficionados have been gleefully decompiling and creating ports of games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, Halo: CE, and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Claude-assisted Nintendo ports of games haven’t been making headlines.

However, while there seem to be fewer examples of AI-decompiled Nintendo ports than Xbox and PlayStation ports, there are still some examples—it’s just that people are being a little bit craftier about advertising them. An understandable tactic, considering Nintendo’s famously litigious history.

For instance, you may have seen dozens of recent examples of non-Nintendo games suddenly being ported to the Nintendo Switch. Obviously, these aren’t Nintendo IPs, so Nintendo isn’t going after those. Several Nintendo-owned properties are being decompiled and ported to PC, though, such as Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, the Nintendo 3DS version of Majora’s Mask, and, perhaps most worryingly (at least for Nintendo), Super Mario Odyssey. Likewise, native PC ports of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are also making the rounds on X.

While most of these projects have yet to draw the ire of Nintendo’s legal team, at least one vibe-coded project has seemingly caught their attention: a web browser port of Super Mario 64 .
