The latest version of Metal Gear's must-have visual mod slices load times, adds raw mouse input, and restores Mel Gibson

Konami might have finally set down the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol 1 to focus on releasing Metal Gear Solid 4 from its PS3 prison, but modders continue chipping away at the PS2-and-earlier era Metal Gear games. MGSHDFix, whose mission statement is to repair broken visual bugs, fix crashes, and generally give the older Metal Gears a bit of a spitshine, has got a big new update. Now is the era of MGSHDFix 5.0 (actually, 5.0.1. There was a hotfix).

"We've got performance improvements, massive vanilla loading time reductions for MGS2, loose .MP3/.WAV/.OGG/FLAC soundtrack loading for MG1/MG2, WIP raw mouse input support, and loads of new restoration and bugfixes", writes author Afevis Solmunko.

There are, to be honest, way too many fixes to properly delve into here, so I recommend either checking the patch notes out yourself or taking the mod for a spin in your preferred Metal Gear. We can call out some of the big ones, though.

For example, want to play Metal Gear 2 as Mel Gibson? No? Well that's a shame, bucko, because MGSHDFix 5.0 provides an option to restore that game's MSX2 sprites. "Yes, you can finally experience Mel Gibson fighting Sean Connery as Kojima intended," writes Solmunko.

Also in the OG MGs, there's now an option "to make doors automatically check your inventory for keycards (how MGS2 keycards work)", which frankly sounds blasphemous to me.

More practically, the latest version of the mod boasts that it dramatically cuts down loading times in MGS2.
