Combining the colors of Magic: the Gathering can bring out their strongest elements. Mono-color decks are actually fairly rare in Commander compared to other formats, so most decks you come up against are at the very least sporting two colors, but when it comes to Esper, we're talking about three: White, Blue, and Black
Over the years, Magic has pushed the limits of what an Esper commander can do. Traditional Esper archetypes can put players in control of armies of massive artifact creatures or have them sit back behind a wall of counterspells and board control, while more modern ones encourage tons of token generation and card-draw combos.
Updated October 27, 2026 by Niall Walsh: Esper continues to be one of the strongest color identities in Magic, with the most popular Commander in the game currently occupying the top spot on EDHREC. It's been over 18 months since we last updated this list, so we've done so, and we're also looking at new Esper Commanders added to the game while flagging those that have experienced a resurgence. Where still relevant, we've left existing Commanders on this list.
Though somewhat mana-intensive, Nevinyrral, Urborg Tyrant is a six-mana Zombie Wizard that synergizes in a powerful fashion with board wipes, potentially even serving as a board wipe itself. While it has hexproof from artifacts, creatures, and enchantments, one of the most notable features of Nevinyrral is that, upon entering the battlefield, it creates a 2/2 zombie token for each creature that had died that turn.
