Retro FPS Game on Steam Is Now Permanently Free, But There's a Catch

Evil Timefall is a 2025 first-person shooter on Steam that recently dropped its $1.50 USD price tag and went free-to-play. The only catch is that the indie game currently has mixed reviews on Steam, with some negative reviews saying it should've been free-to-play from the start. Now that the game has listened to this feedback, more players might be interested in checking it out to see if it's worth their time.

Developer Pinadva Games says the team drew inspiration from the 1992 cult classic movie Army of Darkness. The movie's influence can be seen in Evil Timefall's setting, which features medieval castles while the protagonist wields modern-day weapons. For those who haven't watched Army of Darkness, the movie follows a time traveler who gets stuck in the medieval era and must fight a massive army of the undead.

Don't miss out on any of October's free games across Steam, Epic Games Store, Amazon Prime Gaming, PlayStation Plus, and Xbox Game Pass.

In early October, the developer announced the change, saying, "We're making [Evil Timefall free-to-play] so more players can enjoy the game." The core gameplay loop involves entering monster-infested zones and taking down enemies with the protagonist's primary weapons. Like other FPS games with roguelike elements, Evil Timefall also offers upgrades and power-ups between levels. Additionally, players can collect coins to unlock more weapons along the way.

" However, unlike other titles in the genre, Evil Timefall doesn't offer much replay value, and most players report being able to beat the campaign in one sitting.
