PlayStation really needs to win back some goodwill with its user base right about now, and it seems one of the ways it plans on doing that is by trying to make PS Plus more appealing. A whole suite of new perks should do the trick, right? Well, maybe not.
PlayStation proudly took to social media this morning to showcase all of the new things PS Plus subscribers will now get just for being signed up. The thing is, the carefully curated social media post makes the new offerings seem better than the reality. The implication that PS Plus now comes with YouTube Premium, a subscription to Audible, and a few other desirable perks.
That’s not the case at all. What you’re actually getting are limited-time free trials to those services. Three months of YouTube Premium, a discount on your Audible sub for the same period, oh, and you’re not suddenly getting Sony Pictures Core with all tiers of PS Plus, just the one movie one time. Full access is still reserved for Premium subscribers.
The rest of the new perks are all pretty similar. A timed subscription to Calm, money off a DAZN sub, 5% off consoles and accessories, and 10% off games. It’s something, sure, and if PlayStation was in good standing with its users right now, it would probably be welcomed at best, or simply ignored at worst.
That’s not where PlayStation is right now, though. The company keeps making decisions that feel like it isn’t considering what its users want at all, so the slightly misleading reveal of these new perks has just generated even more fervor among PS5 owners.
