If you’re new to the Pokémon Trading Card Game, then you may be unsure of the three different card types the game uses. Every Pokémon TCG deck uses three types of cards: Pokémon, Trainer, and Energy.

The Pokémon-type cards are the bread-and-butter of this iconic TCG. These are the cards that demand the most attention and are ultimately the cards that your deck is built around. Pokémon cards come in many different flavors, but it all starts with basic Pokémon.

Basic Pokémon are identifiable by the “basic” text in the top left corner of the card. If a Pokémon is basic, it means it can be played directly into the field of play either as your active Pokémon or on your bench without any additional requirements. Basic Pokémon aren’t always weak with low HP, though, as some cards, such as ex Pokémon, enter play with a much higher HP, strong attacks, and even an ability you can activate if certain conditions are met.
