PlayStation Issues Yet Another Official Statement on Ending PS5 Discs

PlayStation’s future is becoming increasingly digital, but physical games have not disappeared just yet, although the company clearly wants everyone to remain aware of its upcoming policy change. The PS5 generation still gives players a choice between buying games digitally and picking up physical copies, but only for a limited time.

PlayStation has already confirmed a major change to its distribution plans, setting a deadline for physical disc copies of new PlayStation games. Under the announced policy, games launching from January 2028 onward will only be sold digitally, including through the PlayStation Store and other retailers—no new discs will be produced afterward, while existing discs will not be affected. The announcement marks a significant shift for PlayStation, even if it does not mean every disc-compatible console or older physical game is suddenly becoming obsolete.

With just over a month until release, Rockstar is confident in GTA 6's release date.

Now, PlayStation has reiterated the policy in a new official notice tied to its latest PS5 hardware announcement. On October 13, Sony revealed the PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black Japanese-language-only model. The announcement includes a reminder that new PlayStation games released from January 2028 will only be available as digital downloads through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers. Disc versions of games released before January 2028 will remain available. In other words, PlayStation is sticking to its guns and policies:

"IMPORTANT NOTICE: PlayStation games released from January 2028 onwards will only be available as digital downloads through the PlayStation Store and other retailers.
