Even though The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimis one of my favorite games, it's difficult to ignore the fact that its companion system is far from perfect. Skyrim's followers can be useful in a fight, carry an absurd amount of loot, and occasionally deliver a memorable line. Of course, Skyrim does have standout followers like Lydia and J’zargo, whose personalities have made them fan favorites for years, but even some of its most distinctive companions are limited by a system that rarely lets them develop beyond their role as the Dragonborn’s ally. Once the novelty of recruiting a new follower wears off, many companions start to feel surprisingly interchangeable.
