One Piece Officially Shuts Down Luffy's Gear 5 In New Release

Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist of One Piece, stands among the Four Emperors of the Sea, as was established in Chapter 1053 on June 20, 2022. Since Luffy's ascension to the position of an Emperor of the Sea, he has continually grown in terms of strength, and much of that can be attributed to his most powerful transformation called Gear 5.

Gear 5 is the awakening of Luffy's Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, which is an incredibly powerful Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit. While this power has taken him far in the final saga of One Piece, it is now officially hitting its limit. In the most recent chapters of the Elbaf arc climax, Eiichiro Oda has officially seen to it that Luffy's Gear 5 shuts down in the battle against Nerona Imu, leaving him defenseless for the moment. If Luffy is to defeat Imu, he needs something much stronger than Gear 5, as is now evident, and Oda may slowly be building towards just that.

Gear 5 is an incredibly powerful ability that allows Luffy to transform into the Sun God Nika of the One Piece world. It grants him a significant buff to all his physical attributes and makes his body even more rubbery and resilient than before. Above all, it gives Luffy the ability to turn into reality anything that he dares to imagine . The biggest source of power for Sun God Nika is his very own imagination, and as long as he can imagine things, he can turn them into reality as well.
