A new Xbox controller is on the way, and its pocket-sized build has suddenly made me acutely aware of just how little flexibility there is when it comes to controller sizes. The new Xbox Nano Controller might not be well-suited to every kind of gamer, but that's the point. Over the years, console gaming has kept things pretty rigid when it comes to controller size variety, and the Nano is hopefully a step in the right direction that brings more diversity to gameplay than the run-of-the-mill one-size-fits-all method that the industry has used for decades.
Even though those interested in the Xbox Nano Controller will have to wait for a few more weeks, the bright side is that it's coming just in time for the holidays. It would be a great gift, of course, but what makes it a particularly great addition to Xbox's hardware lineup is that it presents a chance to bring families together in a far more comfortable way.
A new Xbox Insider survey teases a possible future in which Minecraft, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and more first-party titles are entirely exclusive.
Granted, there have been plenty of third-party game controllers that have provided a solid fix over the years. Companies like Gam Rombo and Playvital have been making cheaper and ergonomic alternatives for a while, but being able to use a first-party-built controller just feels right. However, if the design is simply too big, then it quickly becomes more of a headache than something that's meant to be fun.
