New Open-World Life Sim Game Puts a Unique Twist on the Formula

Fields of Aaru is an upcoming open-world farming and life sim game on Steam with a distinctive setting: the ancient Egyptian afterlife. While Steam has no shortage of games in the genre, Fields of Aaru could offer a breath of fresh air because its unique world is more than an aesthetic choice and also affects gameplay.

Developer Zymartu Games describes Fields of Aaru as an adventure along the Nile where players can live forever alongside the ancient Egyptian gods. Like most cozy farming sim games, Fields of Aaru also lets players build a home, expand their land, and explore uncharted areas. And in this case, those areas appear to be the pyramids.

A brand-new cozy adventure game with a heartwarming story is garnering 'very positive' reviews on Steam and is now free to play.

A creative twist Fields of Aaru brings to the subgenre of Stardew Valley-like games is its real-life-inspired ancient crafts. Players will need to use ancient technologies to run their farm, a concept many would argue is underused in the life simulation genre. Examples of such skills cited by developer Zymartu Games include "shaping stone, firing clay, and irrigating fields."

Fields of Aaru also features an interesting cast of characters, including several famous figures from ancient Egyptian mythology. Ptah, Hapi, Sekhmet, and Anubis are all part of the roster players can interact with. Making offerings to these gods can grant players new powers, with each god's blessings reflecting their nature. For instance, Sekhmet, the goddess of war, grants players combat and adventure skills.
