While AI causes price spikes for, well, just about any consumer tech, many cheaper, more compact PCs are becoming popular. They’re not likely to play the latest games at 4K resolutions or high frame rates, but they can be a dependable workhorse that costs a darn sight less than other alternatives.

Case in point: This GMKtec M6 Ultra Mini PC. Despite the naming conventions, this doesn’t include an Apple M6 chip, but it does have an AMD Ryzen 5 7640HS chip inside. And, perhaps best of all, it’s seeing a 60% discount on AliExpress.

The retailer is offering the mini marvel for just £399.64, a steep drop from its £1020.90 asking price, with 16GB of RAM for multitasking and 512GB of SSD storage.

I’m old enough to remember when a similar spec machine would cost hundreds more than this, and that’s pre-RAMpocalypse pricing… although maybe I’m just showing my age.

It’s running a genuine copy of Windows 11 Pro out of the box, and what the AMD Radeon 760M GPU lacks for power, this PC makes up for with ports. There’s WiFi 6E and a LAN connection, as well as HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort, and USB 4.0 connections. In many ways, it’s an ideal media server, especially at this price.

You can pack more storage and RAM into it in time, too, so if you want to revisit it once RAM prices level out, you can ramp up to 128GB of DDR5 and 8TB of M.2 storage.
