Metroid Prime Remastered launched in 2023 as an updated version of the 2002 GameCube masterpiece. We gave the remaster a 10/10 in our review, with Sam Claiborn writing, “This updated version goes above and beyond the typical coat-of-paint remaster by adding modern controls along with fabulously improved models and textures – it’s a perfect example of how to both honor a lauded classic and bring it up to code.”
I completely agree with that assessment. Despite loving Super Metroid on SNES and the 2D handheld follow-ups, I never actually played Metroid Prime until this remaster came out – and it quickly became one of my favorite games in the series. Thanks to Nintendo’s upgrades, it feels almost indistinguishable from a modern release. It’s an absolutely killer FPS game that takes everything that makes 2D Metroid games great (the giant bosses, the lonely atmosphere, progress that’s gated until you get an upgrade, etc.) and blows it up into 3D.
It really is one of the best first-person shooters ever made. It’s incredibly fun to play, even in the 2020s. The only real quibble I had with it was the lack of fast travel, which is a choice some game developers still make these days.
