Mass Effect TV Show Still Going Ahead After EA Cancels Mass Effect 5 And Closes BioWare, Report Says

While EA has closed BioWare and canceled the next Mass Effect game, the TV show based on the sci-fi series remains in development, according to a source speaking to IGN. The source said all the key creative people attached to the project for Prime Video remain signed on.

This would seemingly include BioWare project director and executive producer, Mike Gamble, who was part of the layoffs at BioWare.

The Mass Effect show was first revealed back in 2021, so it’s been in the works for a long time already. The last we heard--which was back in 2025--was that Doug Jung (Star Trek Beyond) was the Mass Effect show's showrunner and that Fast & Furious 9 writer Daniel Casey was on board as a writer for it.

Prime Video is heavily invested in gaming, as it's also home to the upcoming Tomb Raider and God of War shows. The platform also hosts the popular Fallout TV show, which is coming back for a third season.

The closure of BioWare and cancellation of the next Mass Effect game came after EA went private via a sale to Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. Affinity Partners and Silver Lake were also part of the investor consortium.

EA had said it was looking for $700 million in cost savings to help service the massive debt from the sale, with many fearing layoffs and studio closures. In addition to BioWare shutting down, EA said it was conducting wider layoffs across the company and stopping development on other projects, like a new The Sims game.
