It's Officially The End of an Era for PlayStation

An 18-year-long era for PlayStation is coming to an end, after competitors Xbox released its very own Platinum Trophy equivalent: Mythic Achievements. Platinum Trophies are awarded when PlayStation gamers unlock every other Trophy in any given game, and Xbox is finally following suit.

Xbox first introduced achievements with the Xbox 360 in 2005, giving players extra incentives to stick with their favorite games for longer. Gamers earn Gamerscore, a number that appears on their profile to show others how many achievements they have earned over the years. The system proved extremely popular, and Sony finally followed suit in 2008, adding Trophies. To differentiate itself, Sony added an extra tier, giving players one last reward after unlocking every other Trophy in a game: Platinum Trophies. In the years since, hunting Platinum Trophies has become a serious hobby for dedicated gamers.

PlayStation users only have one month left to take advantage of a popular service before Sony shuts it down permanently on November 2.

After Xbox finally released Mythic Achievements for Insiders last week, Sony's PlayStation is no longer the only major platform to offer an achievement for getting every other achievement in a game. For 18 years, players who wanted that completionist reward had to play on PlayStation, but that is no longer the case after Xbox finally played catch-up more than two decades after the launch of its own achievement system.

One of the most interesting aspects of Xbox Mythic Achievements is that they also apply retroactively, meaning developers of older titles don't have to take the time to go back and add them in.
