EA has shut down yet another one of its games, with the latest shutdown marking an unfortunate end of an era for the company. EA has come under fire recently for the controversial decision to shutter BioWare, the developer behind classic games like the original Baldur's Gate titles, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and various others. EA's decision to close BioWare hit Mass Effect fans especially hard, as the studio was actively working on a new entry in the beloved sci-fi franchise.
Shortly after it was announced that EA was shutting down BioWare, a trailer for the canceled Mass Effect Universe hit the internet. The Mass Effect Universe trailer generated significant buzz and helped fuel demand for the game to resume development, but despite petitions and online outrage, it doesn't seem as though EA is changing its mind about closing BioWare. Besides studio shutdowns, EA has also been criticized recently for its frequent game shutdowns, with many of its live-service titles shut down regularly.
In a shocking announcement, it's been confirmed that BioWare is permanently shutting down and work on the new Mass Effect is being scrapped.
EA shuts down games so often that it has a dedicated page to let fans know of upcoming game shutdowns. On one hand, it is nice that EA gamers know what's getting shut down well in advance, but on the other hand, it's a shame that EA shuts down enough games for such a thing to be necessary. In any case, EA's most recent game shutdown saw NBA Live Mobile permanently taken offline , marking the end of an era for the company.
