The Backrooms left me with more questions than answers, which to be fair is exactly what I wanted from it. But, while I enjoy sustaining the mystique of this odd liminal space, I would like to see a bit more of what Parsons has to offer of his take on the backrooms—so yes, I would like a sequel.
It's still touch and go whether Parsons will even revisit The Backrooms on the silver screen, but if he did there are a couple of things he'd apparently do differently:
"I consider it, me advancing and doubling down on the strengths that I think are more universally recognised about the core idea," Parsons says in an interview with The Kyle Buchanan Show. "Rather than doubling down on the things or points where it didn't feel like it accurately spoke to the cultural core of Backrooms in the first film—[there are] a few little places here and there, that I would personally go out of my way to poke at a little bit."
Instead of approaching a sequel in the traditional sense of a linear continuation of the story, Parsons may try something different , like "an expanding image rather than a line". A sequel would simply serve to add more flavour to the universe like "a different branch on the tree" instead of strictly following the same story and characters from the first movie. It seems that Parsons wishes to add more life to his version of the backrooms in this way, so the viewer can decide how much they wish to watch and "when to stop".
