How Warren James turned Space King into one of Kickstarter’s biggest board games

Warren James knew Space King: The Board Game would sell, but it never expected to land among the biggest gaming campaigns in Kickstarter history.

The project reached its funding goal in about six minutes, according to the company’s blog post, and has raised nearly $10 million thus far. It ranks among the 10 highest-funded gaming projects on the platform. Warren James, a U.S.-based brand development and white-label merchandising company, is on pace for a record year in tabletop games. Co-founder Ben Wiedner said the company is on track to raise more than $20 million on Kickstarter in board games in 2026, a category that could eventually overtake its core business.

“We knew this was going to be massively successful because we know how well all of Space King’s other consumer products do, and we knew that this IP was so perfect for this product,” Wiedner told GamesBeat. “Did we think it was going to be a top 10 all-time board game on the platform amongst literally tens of thousands of prior campaigns? I don’t think we expected that.”

“Our core business is still the biggest part of our business, and that’s creating consumer products broadly speaking, so apparel, toys, collectibles,” Wiedner said. “But we’re on track to do north of $20 million on Kickstarter this year in the board game category, and we see it being a huge opportunity of growth for our business. So it would not surprise me if that flips at some point.

Space King is based on the animated YouTube series from Tom and Don, the creators known as Flashgitz.
