GTA6 Leaks ‘Downgrade’ Accusations Were Overblown, And There’s A Reason Why

There’s a lot of conversation online about the merits and drawbacks of video game leaks. On one hand, it can give potential players an unfiltered look at a game that goes outside the bounds of company-approved messaging. On the other, depending on just how old the build we see is, we might get a skewed sense of what the game is actually like. Unauthorized footage of a pre-release build of Grand Theft Auto 6 has been leaking for over a week now, and that was just long enough for there to be accusations that the game had been “downgraded” from what people saw in the earliest trailers.

Well, today we got a brand new, 26-minute look at the game on Netflix, and it has mostly quieted fears that the game will look like it did in leaker Cyberleek’s multiple clips. It’s a relief, but also maybe a teaching moment.

The biggest crime The GTA 6 leaker may have committed is just how terribly he presented the game.

The first time Grand Theft Auto 6 leaked back in 2022 , some argued that by showing an early version of the game, leakers were giving fans an unprecedented but also inaccurate look at what the game would actually be when it came out several years later. Part of the problem is that the video game industry is notoriously secretive regarding how the sausage is made, so much so that entities outside of it are shocked to find out just how many redacted files show up in court documents about the inner workings of the business.
