Takashi Yamazaki's sci-fi monster movie was an enormous achievement, blending spectacular destruction with a surprisingly moving story about postwar Japan, survivors' guilt, and resilience. Rather than just adding another entry to a franchise that's been running for decades, Godzilla Minus One became a critical sensation, earned a 99% Rotten Tomatoes score, and even secured Godzilla its first Academy Award. Naturally, following up such a resounding success poses a challenge for its sequel.
