A short gameplay clip from the upcoming Fable reboot, set to launch early next year on Xbox, PC, and PS5, is going viral, but not in a way developer Playground Games likely intended. A short video of the main character swinging a sword at a big enemy and getting little reaction from the baddie is being spread around online as proof that the game’s combat is terrible. But, as is often the case with these types of viral posts, the truth isn’t quite that simple.
On August 26, as part of Gamescom, Xbox released a new gameplay video of Fable. In the nearly 20-minute-long gameplay video, we see the game’s hero going on a quest, exploring the world of Albion, and fighting some enemies. But one 60-second moment from this long video is being spread around on places like Reddit and Twitter.
On Twitter, the video was shared with the caption “Fable’s combat” followed by a suspicious-looking emoji face. The video has racked up nearly 3 million views in the last 24 hours and seems to show the main character attacking an enemy over and over again, with the enemy barely reacting to their sword and seemingly having a ton of health, making the fight look like a boring slog. This same clip also blew up on Reddit with over 5k upvotes and a lot of negative comments. Things got so bad that some users tried sharing longer clips of combat to show that, actually, Fable’s combat isn’t as bad as the viral clip implies.
