Over the years, the Fallout franchise has used almost every entry to showcase a new side of post-Great War America. There have been a few repeats, of course, but each chapter throughout the series has its own unique view of what post-apocalyptic life in America would look like. Wastelands are the backbone of Fallout, but some are definitely more well-suited for long-term survival than others.
From the Appalachian mountains to the Mojave Desert, America's post-nuclear landscape is vast and unforgiving, which is what makes each new Wasteland so cool to experience for the first time. Fallout's lore and world-building are deeply compelling, and after decades loving the games, there are a few key wastelands that I have come to think of as the worst and best to be a survivor in.
This list ranks Fallout games from least survivable to the most survivable. Also, I'm focusing solely on the main Fallout canon, so games like Fallout Tactics, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, and Fallout Shelter have been left out.
Creatures like Deathclaws and Feral Ghouls aren't anything new to the franchise, but Fallout 3 and its setting make for one of the harshest wastelands that the series has seen. C. area is post-Great War. There is practically no functioning society in this wasteland besides small groups, and exploring the underground metro system for the first time and running into Ghouls turns the RPG into a horror game.
