Long before Planet Vegeta was ruled by the Vegeta Royal Family in Dragon Ball Z, the Ancient Saiyans lived on Planet Sadala under no one's rule but their own. In such a lawless land, however, Evil Saiyans began to rise and oppress their weaker, more docile kin. Only one soul was brave enough to stand up before the evil lurking in the hearts of the Saiyan race – the original Legendary Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan God, Yamoshi.
Yamoshi was a powerful Ancient Saiyan who gave his life to create a better world and his legacy continues into modern day Dragon Ball through his descendants. The strongest of Yamoshi's relatives are some of the most powerful beings in Dragon Ball, capable of doing battle with literal Gods and Fusions strong enough to threaten the very fabric of the multiverse. Yamoshi may have failed to defeat the Ancient Saiyans of yore, but his legacy never died out.
The Dragon Ball Z movies often varied in quality, but the best of the best were as good as anything Akira Toriyama came up with himself.
The fact that Yamoshi was the original Legendary Super Saiyan in Universe 7 means that both Paragus and Broly are his descendants. Given the fact Paragus had a Power Level of 4,200 at the time of his death (a high rating for a Saiyan of his status), he must have been quite the warrior in his pride.
