Dark Souls' bosses are legendary, and no one fits the description better than Knight Artorias. Though not in the base game, he's the main attraction of the "Artorias of the Abyss" DLC, where he challenges players in one of the franchise's best and hardest battles. Even in his withered one-handed state, he is strong, and Prime Artorias was on a whole other level. However, several Dark Souls characters make this Knight seem like a weakling.
I love Artorias, but you have to separate his fight from the lore. Due to his aggressive, fast-paced nature, Artorias plays like a prototype for Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3's boss design, forcing players to break away from DS1's slow, deliberate gameplay. He is the hardest fight in the first game, but that doesn't automatically make him the strongest boss or character. If anything, his encounter is misleading.
Just to make things more interesting, I'm imagining the characters at their best, at least according to the lore.
Yes, that's right, you are stronger than Artorias . I mean, it makes sense, doesn't it? Of course, the person who ultimately put the Knight to rest must be better than him; however, the Chosen Undead defeats Artorias at his lowest point , when he can't use his dominant arm, fights without a shield, and has lost his sanity to the Abyss. While the Dark provides supernatural enhancement by eliminating his ability to feel pain and granting wrath bursts to his attacks, it also strips him of tactical discipline, leaving him a shell of the warrior he once was.
