I kind of gave my opinions away already about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 by saying that the opening scene of the outbreak of war between North Korea and South Korea was one of the best openings ever. Then I said the campaign was one of the best experiences ever.
I suppose I should really go back and check past years, but I’ve played every single Call of Duty that has come out, ever. Last year’s Black Ops 7 wasn’t so good. But I can confidently say, with this full review, that Call of Duty is back. The full game, with the campaign, DMZ extraction, and multiplayer launches now. And it exceeded my expectations — by returning to form.
For Activision (and its parent Activision Blizzard and its parent Xbox and its parent Microsoft), this is great news. Call of Duty is a pillar of gaming, with more than 500 million copies sold as of 2024, and more than $30 billion in lifetime revenue since 2022. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was great in 2024 with the biggest launch in franchise history, but Black Ops 7 was a dud. It’s not unusual for a Call of Duty game to hit $1 billion in 10 days.
But can Modern Warfare 4 bring back the lapsed players, and can it do it before they get obsessed with Grand Theft Auto VI?
We’ll find out. But meanwhile, I’m very happy about the overall quality of Modern Warfare 4 because it went back to what made the series great.
