The story of Black Clover throws the spotlight on two characters in particular, those being Asta, the protagonist, and Yuno, the deuteragonist and the long-time rival of our MC. Without either of these characters, the Black Clover story would cease to function. Their relationship is especially important, as the two of them mirror each other perfectly.
Both of these characters are brilliant, but they each have their style and limitations, which often drive criticism from the fans. Yuno's character has, for instance, often been criticized for his prodigious nature. While Asta was born with no magic abilities, Yuno was always blessed from the very beginning, and throughout the Black Clover story, he kept acquiring new power-ups along the way. In Yuki Tabata's new Black Clover Guidebook, Perfect Grimoire, he shuts down the idea of Yuno being a natural prodigy altogether, changing the character forever. Tabata affirms that Yuno has worked as hard as Asta to reach the point where he is today, and will continue to grow.
Black Clover kicked off in Weekly Shonen Jump all the way back on February 16, 2015, with the release of Chapter 1 in Issue #12. Upon the release of the first chapter, we were introduced to our two main characters, those being Asta, a young boy with no mana in a world filled with magic, and Yuno, a natural prodigy with powerful magic prowess. In the very first chapter, the two went on to introduce their rivalry to us and, with it, their ultimate goal, which was for one of them to become the Wizard King of the Clover Kingdom, or in other words, become the strongest mage there is.
