There have been several games that have become trapped in infamously long development cycles, only to eventually be released or canceled. Beyond Good And Evil 2 has become perhaps the most infamous as even though it was announced in 2008, it still doesn’t fall into either of those categories, and somehow, development continues.
Since development has been going on in some form or fashion for 18 years, and Beyond Good And Evil 2 has miraculously managed to avoid Ubisoft’s very active axe, you’d assume that its long-awaited launch must now be right around the corner. You’d assume wrong. According to a new report from Origami, not only is the Beyond Good And Evil sequel far from finished, but it hasn’t even left pre-production.
The report cites several sources close to the project who naturally have to remain anonymous and provides updates not only on where the game is at right now, but insight into why it’s taking so long and how it has managed to survive amid widespread Ubisoft cuts. There are currently 250 people working on Beyond Good And Evil 2 at Ubisoft Montpellier, with the next goal being to get the game out of pre-production and into alpha, finally, after 18 years.
The hope that the game might finally leave pre-production is fueled by its shift to a single-player focus. Until recently, the goal was for Beyond Good And Evil 2 to be a largely online multiplayer game. Apparently its developers pulled inspiration from Fortnite and Destiny , which is amusing as neither of those games existed when the Ubisoft sequel was originally announced.
