Best RPGs Where Saving The World Means Destroying The Old One

We all know that saving the world is practically a full-time job for most RPG protagonists. If it's not some evil god bent on world domination, then there will be an ancient monster or maybe just a regular ambitious villain threatening to destroy the planet. Most of the time, there's also a pretty clear goal, which is to stop the bad guy and save everyone. Thankfully, plenty of games are ready to switch things up and make their stories more interesting.

Defeating the villain isn't always enough to save the world, especially when the world itself is a big part of the problem. Sometimes, the only way to give humanity a chance for a brighter future is to destroy everything that came before it. I get it, destroying the world sounds like a questionable way to save it, but these RPGs actually make a surprisingly convincing case for why it's the best course of action.

The story in Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne takes place in modern-day Tokyo, where a high-school student visits his teacher at the hospital. However, soon his mundane life comes to an end, as he witnesses an apocalyptic event known as the Conception. It destroys the world as he knows it and transforms the city into the Vortex World, which is a wasteland inhabited by demons.

Shin Megami Tensei III’s Dark Magatama are some of the strongest in the game and hidden all throughout the Vortex World.

The protagonist is one of the survivors, but he becomes the Demi-fiend — a creature with both human and demonic characteristics.
