The Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, is one of the most powerful Devil Fruits to be introduced in One Piece by the creator, Eiichiro Oda. This Devil Fruit made its debut in One Piece in the very first chapter on July 18, 1997, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 34. However, it wasn't until One Piece Chapter 1044, which was released on March 28, 2022, that the true nature of this Devil Fruit was revealed.
In this chapter, Eiichiro Oda confirmed to us that Luffy's Devil Fruit was actually a Mythical Zoan that goes by the name of Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. By awakening it, he tapped into his Gear 5 transformation. 4 years have passed since then, and now, Luffy is finally looking to tap into a new Nika transformation, which Oda is lining up for the end of the Elbaf arc.
Luffy's Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika awakening gives him access to Gear 5, and over the years he has utilized this power on various occasions. His first usage of it came against Kaido, and it enabled him to defeat the Yonko of the Sea and claim the title of the Emperor for himself.
"Awakening [the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika] further strengthens their rubber body and gives them even more freedom, limited only by their own imagination.
