7 Old-School Disney Classics Better Than Most Modern Animated Movies

Animation has come an extraordinarily long way over the years. Modern studios can create worlds that would've been unimaginable when Walt Disney Animation creatives were drawing every frame by hand, and movies like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has shown just how much further the medium can still be pushed. Better tech, however, doesn't automatically mean a better movie.

Some of Disney's old-school classics are still difficult to beat, even decades later. These animated films weren't afraid to scare children, give their villains genuinely uncomfortable motivations, and could somehow tell complete stories without needing extended runtimes to do it. From a movie released in 1940 to the very best of the Disney Renaissance, these seven classics still do certain things better than most modern animated films.

Animated classics like The Lion King will always define Disney, but the studio also boasts some great live-action movies, too.

There are scenes in The Hunchback of Notre Dame where it's difficult to believe Disney was making a kids' movie. Quasimodo spends his life being manipulated by the man who raised him, and Esmeralda is persecuted because of who she is. Not to mention, the despicable Judge Claude Frollo manages to intimidate viewers without possessing a single magical power; all he needs is the unwavering belief that everything terrible he does is completely justified, and the fact he has so much power over others allows him to do whatever he likes.

" Frollo wrestles with his lust for Esmeralda, blames her for making him feel it, and ultimately decides she must submit to him or die.
