Spy TV shows have been captivating audiences for decades, but they can easily run out of steam. It doesn't take long for a secret identity to become boring or a convoluted conspiracy to get too messy before the twists start feeling a bit ridiculous. Even some of the best espionage shows have struggled to maintain their early momentum; Killing Eve is perhaps the best example. What started as one of the most intense cat-and-mouse games on TV ended with a shift in focus and tone and a controversial finale.
On the flip side, though, there are plenty of elite spy series with consistently great installments. Whether they're grounded Cold War dramas or contemporary intelligence thrillers, these six spy shows maintained an exceptional quality across their seasons, and any fan of the genre will have plenty of fun watching.
It's not easy for a compelling sci-fi TV series to maintain its quality throughout its entire run, but elite shows like LOST and The Expanse did it.
Tom Hiddleston is perfectly cast as Jonathan Pine , a former British soldier whose impeccable manners and seemingly unflappable demeanor make him an ideal undercover operative. Based on John le Carré's novel, The Night Manager follows Pine as he infiltrates the inner circle of Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie), a wealthy international arms dealer whose charm only barely conceals his ruthlessness. Spy fans will get plenty of thrills watching Pine navigate Roper's luxurious world, while knowing that a single misstep could expose him, particularly as his relationship with Roper's girlfriend makes things more complicated.
