In just its third ever feature film, the DCU is getting dark. Following Superman and Supergirl is Clayface, which is being marketed as a standalone superhero horror movie. Although it stars a classic Batman villain and is set in Gotham City, Clayface is easily the most self-contained DCU project we've had so far. There is no cameo from David Corenswet or John Cena, for instance, and certainly no appearance from the DCU's Batman.
That said, no movie set in the DC universe can go by without featuring a handful of Easter eggs and references to prior comic books and/or screen adaptations. That goes double for any movie set in Gotham, one of the most storied settings in all superhero media. Some may be obvious to the more eagle-eyed in the audience, while others might be much harder to spot, but here's every Easter egg hiding under the surface in Clayface.
A classic Batman villain gets his own movie, but some fans might be confused about where and when it's supposed to take place.
While fans knew to expect Gotham City to be a major location in Clayface, we weren't primed for much of the movie to take place in Coast City, too. Early reports about the film indicated it would be set in both Gotham and Los Angeles. The confusion is understandable, though, given that Coast City is very clearly intended to be the DCU's version of L.A.
Coast City has long been located on America's west coast in DC lore, but it's unusual for it to be a straight-up stand-in for the City of Angels.
