AI-powered chemical R&D startup NuSynth Technologies raises Rs 36.5 crore led by Avaana, Shastra VC

Chemical process innovation startup NuSynth Technologies has raised Rs 36.5 crore (around $4 million) in a seed funding round co-led by Avaana Capital and Shastra VC, as it seeks to develop more cost-efficient and sustainable methods for manufacturing complex chemicals.

The round also included participation from seven to eight angel investors.

NuSynth is developing a research and development (R&D) platform that uses AI and experimental data to identify alternative chemical synthesis routes. The startup aims to lower manufacturing costs, improve production yields, shorten development cycles and reduce dependence on imported raw materials, particularly from China.

India has established substantial chemical manufacturing capacity but continues to depend on overseas suppliers for several advanced chemical intermediates, including those used in pharmaceutical production.

These intermediates are essential building blocks in the manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and other speciality chemicals.

NuSynth aims to address some of these challenges by redesigning chemical manufacturing processes rather than making incremental improvements to existing methods.

Its platform evaluates raw materials, chemical reaction pathways and process economics to identify alternative synthesis routes that could improve efficiency, safety, sustainability and scalability.

The startup uses predictive synthesis models and an AI engine that analyses experimental data to guide subsequent research. By drawing on the results of previous experiments, including unsuccessful ones, the platform is designed to help researchers identify promising approaches and reduce the time required for chemical process development.

“We are talking about R&D as a growth engine,” co-founder Poorvank Purohit, who previously served as managing director and CEO of Solara Active Pharma Sciences said .
