The payments processor had planned to issue its own stablecoin, FIUSD, by last year, but the strategy shifted for multiple reasons.
Mega payments processor Fiserv had planned to launch a stablecoin by the end of last year, but then plans changed.
In June 2025, Fiserv said it would launch the FIUSD coin for use by its clients by the end of the year, along with a digital asset platform for hosting stablecoins.
Now, Fiserv isn’t saying exactly when it will launch its own stablecoin. It’s still committed to FIUSD, but the rest of the details are evolving, according to Sunil Sachdev, Fiserv’s head of embedded finance. In the meantime, Fiserv said last week that its digital asset system is up and running, now hosting the Bank of North Dakota’s stablecoin, called Roughrider.
In an interview Friday, Sachdev talked about the company’s pivot on FIUSD, acknowledging the course change, but explaining how it will eventually be a smart move for the Milwaukee-based processor at some point, given its broad ecosystem of clients, including financial institutions and merchants. Pursuing FIUSD is still “the right decision for us, even as we launch Roughrider,” he said.
“We have over 300 million bank accounts on our core banking systems; we have over five to six million merchants globally, so when you talk to anybody that's looking and operating in the digital asset space, they talk about how many endpoints or how many nodes are on that network,” he said.
