Paymentology backs AI-powered SME spend management platform

Global issuer processor Paymentology has partnered with South African technology firm Byte Orbit to launch Paystashio, an AI-powered spend management platform designed to help small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) control company expenditure and reduce administrative workloads.

The platform combines Paymentology’s real-time issuer processing technology with Byte Orbit’s FinTech expertise, allowing businesses to issue physical and virtual cards to employees, set individual spending limits, monitor transactions in real time and automate expense reconciliation.

Paystashio was developed in response to common challenges faced by businesses managing company expenditure, including shared corporate cards, missing receipts, employee reimbursement claims and time-consuming manual reconciliation.

Using AI, the platform categorises transactions, matches purchases with supporting documentation and streamlines the reconciliation process. It also offers adjustable spending limits, digital receipt capture and integrations with accounting platforms including Xero and Sage, with QuickBooks integration planned.

Paymentology provides the underlying payment infrastructure, authorising transactions in real time and enforcing spending controls at the point of purchase. This gives businesses greater visibility over employee spending while allowing finance teams to maintain oversight of company budgets.

Byte Orbit has nearly 20 years of experience developing enterprise banking and FinTech products. Through Paystashio, the company aims to give employees greater flexibility over business spending while reducing the administrative burden on finance teams.

The launch comes as South African businesses increasingly turn to digital tools to improve financial operations. Xero’s State of South African Small Business 2025 report found that 40% of small businesses using cloud tools said the technology helped reduce administrative work or automate tasks.
