Monzo launches in Spain in latest European expansion push

Monzo, the UK-based digital bank, has gone live in Spain, rolling out a range of accounts tailored to Spanish consumers, families and companies as it pushes further into Europe.

From today, customers in Spain can sign up for Monzo’s personal, joint, under 18, business and instant access savings accounts, all free and run through a single app. Every account is issued with a Spanish IBAN and connects with Bizum, the country’s mobile payment platform.

The bank is fully regulated and registered with the Banco de Espana, and says it wants to simplify day-to-day banking while building the kind of customer trust it has developed in its home market.

Spain is Monzo’s first continental European market. The move follows the firm obtaining its European banking licence from the Central Bank of Ireland in December 2025 and going live in Ireland in April 2026. Monzo opened a Spanish waitlist in May so it could gather feedback from early users before launch.

Monzo is targeting a market where frustration with traditional banks remains high. Its own research found that 48% of Spaniards with low trust in their bank believe it does not act in their best interests, while close to 60% have been hit by unexpected fees. Some 47% said they need help to interpret their bank’s products, terms or communications, and just 26% of small and medium-sized firms feel their business banking is good value.

In the run-up to launch, the company worked with early personal and business users to identify local problems and shape its offering.
