AI agents that can read the inbox, the card statement and every renewal are turning forgotten subscriptions into one-word cancellations.
Payment rails from AWS, Stripe, Visa and Mastercard now let agents buy a single use of a service.
Service and content providers are shifting from one-size-fits-all subscriptions to pricing by the call, often at a few cents per use.
Consumer artificial intelligence (AI) agents are getting the keys to inboxes, browsers and payment accounts. Meta’s Muse, launched Sept. 8, can send emails, fill out forms and pay at checkout through Stripe’s Link, PYMNTS reported. Three weeks later, OpenAI introduced “dots,” AI agents which run on their own cloud computers and connect to more than 4,000 apps, PYMNTS noted.

Those keys also open the monthly bills. Subscriptions are an early target. Rocket Money’s Rowan texts a customer about an unused free trial and cancels it after a one-word reply, with no phone call, PYMNTS reported.
That puts both sides of the subscription in play. Agents can review every renewal. New payment rails let them buy a single use instead of a whole plan.
Subscription revenue depends on customers who stop looking at the charge. Rowan is built to keep looking. It goes after “the forgotten subscriptions, the bills that creep up,” Aaron Dignan , vice president of agentic products at Rocket Money said .
