The partnership will layer Backbase’s platform above BBL’s existing Finastra core system rather than replacing it. Backbase’s Connectivity Layer, branded Grand Central, handles integration between the two environments, allowing BBL to add a modern customer-facing and mid-office stack without undertaking a full core migration. Three marketplace partners complete the build: Feedzai for fraud detection, Jumio for identity verification, and DocuSign for electronic signatures.
On the customer side, the bank expects to replace manual and fragmented onboarding workflows with digital self-service and faster account opening. Business customers are set to gain unified cash-flow visibility, consolidating what the bank describes as previously siloed views of their finances. Internally, the goal is a single customer view for service staff, reducing resolution times that the release says currently run to days.
BBL previously completed a core banking migration to Finastra and moved to the cloud, steps the bank says laid the technical foundation for this next phase. The Backbase deployment therefore represents the customer-experience and AI layer built on top of that infrastructure, rather than another core replacement.
Jouk Pleiter, chief executive at Backbase, described the bank as “exactly the kind of institution Backbase was built for,” citing its market-leading position and what he called the strategic discipline of the BBL leadership team.
Backbase reports more than 120 bank deployments globally across retail, SMB, commercial, private banking and wealth segments. In the small-to-mid-size bank segment across Latin America and the Caribbean, the vendor competes with a range of digital banking platform providers, including Temenos , Mambu and regionally focused players.
