APX Lending to Bring Bitcoin-Backed Mortgages to Canada

For a growing number of Canadians, Bitcoin is one of the most valuable things they own. A home is the other. Until now, getting one has often meant giving up the other one. APX Lending (“APX”) announced plans to bring Bitcoin-backed mortgages to Canada, with a rollout expected in Q1 2027.

Today, a Bitcoin holder who wants to buy a home usually has two options. They can sell their Bitcoin to fund a down payment, giving up their long-term position and potentially triggering capital gains tax on the sale. Or they can wait on the sidelines, because many traditional lenders still don’t know how to treat digital assets as part of a borrower’s financial picture.

APX clients have already used digital-asset-backed loans to put money toward real estate projects, pay down high-interest debt and finance their businesses. Offering Bitcoin-backed mortgages are the natural next step: a product built for the single largest purchase most people will ever make.

The opportunity in Canada is growing fast. One in four Canadians (25%) now owns crypto, up from 10% in 2023, according to a 2026 survey by the Ontario Securities Commission. In the U.S., crypto mortgage lender Milo has passed $100 million in crypto mortgage originations, including a single $12 million loan. Bitcoin-backed lending market is projected to reach $1 trillion within the next five to 10 years.

APX’s Bitcoin-backed mortgages are being designed to let borrowers pledge their Bitcoin as collateral toward a home purchase, so they can keep their holdings and their exposure to Bitcoin’s long-term potential.
